Welcome to the UW Chemistry Library and another School year. Here are some of the new features and some of the services provided by the Chemistry Library and the University of Washington Libraries.
The Chemistry Library has 2 full time staff members and several students who are all here to help you use the Chemistry Library.
Susanne Redalje is the librarian and Head of the library. Primary responsibilities include providing reference service and instructing users in the use of the library on the individual or group level, as well as collection development.
Don Anglin supervises the student assistants, handles circulation, reserves, and provides most of our technical/computer assistance and advice.
The entire Chemistry Library Bldg. is Wireless!
Can't find an article you are looking for? The issue you need was just sent to binding and won't be back for months?
We can get the article for you. Fill out the form at Article Request Form - UW Science Libraries,
making sure you choose a library at the end of the form, and we will get the article for you. Going through Interlibrary loan is another option. The link to ILL is below.
For books which we don't own, first redo your search through Summit, using the link on the online catalog. Summit is the combined catalog of the Orbis-Cascade Alliance, a consortium of more than 26 institutions in Oregon and Washington and contains over 22 million books and other materials. You can check out books via Summit but not journals. If you still do not find the book you wish,
go through Interlibrary Loan. For more information, go to Interlibrary Loan.
The Chemical Abstracts databases and the Beilstein/Gmelin databases are the most important databases for most areas of chemistry. They are not available via the web but are still available via the Internet for you to use from home or your office. We are pleased to note that there is now a proxy server for these which allows access via broadband! Information on the proxy server and how to load the software on your workstation is found on the Chemistry Library's web page.
The Chemistry Library no longer has a separate printer near the Workstations. Instead, these computers link via pharos to the copiers in the Photocopy Room. Use either your Husky Card or a Dawg-Prints card to pay for your copies/prints. For more information: Dawg-prints.com
Organize your references, develop bibliographies with RefWorks, an online personal citation database and bibliography creator that allows you to import, store, and share your research citations and automatically formats your bibliographies into whatever style you need.
It is now possible to make articles, quizzes, problems sets and more available electronically. Materials are then available 24/7 with no more lines at the photocopy machine nor chances of lost pages. For more information contact chemlib@u.washington.edu
Many UW Libraries web-based e-journals and databases require users to authenticate themselves as official UW users. One way is to use UWICK, The UW Internet Connectivity Kit. Beilstein Crossfire and SciFinder Scholar require UWICK for authentification as they are not web-based. For web-based journals and reference sources which are limited to UW users, use the UW Libraries Proxy Server. For information on the server, check out for more information on the UW Libraries Proxy Server Wizard.
You can place holds on books, keep track of what you have checked out, pay fines, and much more from the Web now. Start at Managing your Library Account to find out more information and to log into your own account.
Faculty/TA's-would you like to include a library project in your assignments? Like an introduction to our new electronic products for yourself or your students? Perhaps a webpage providing an overview on how to search for chemical information would be useful? Contact me and we can discuss the options which best meet your needs.
