BC Archives Newspaper and Clipping

sources of press coverage of British Columbia social life and
history at the BC Archives.

present. For older citations, see:

available on microfiche.
Pacific Northwest Regional Newspaper and Periodical Index http://db.lib.washington.edu/pnw/
Note: this electronic index is being compiled from the original
card file index still housed in Special Collections, University
of Washington Libraries. The electronic index is still quite
incomplete, so researchers should refer as well to the original
Pacific Northwest Regional Newspaper and Periodical Index card
file.

Pacific Northwest Newspaper Clippings Collection Electronic
Resource http://content.wsulibs.wsu.edu/pncc/NHD/Home.html
As with the PNW Regional Newspaper and Periodical Index and
the Vancouver Public Library Northwest database, WSU is loading
its Newspapers Clippings File to the web. This index covers
local Eastern Washington newspapers, some Western Washington
newspapers and some national newspapers with stories of local
interest. In this case though, the actual clippings have been
digitized, so, although the collection is highly selective,
it provides the fulltext of each article.
Vancouver Public Library Northwest Database http://www3.vpl.ca/spe/northwest/simpleNorthwestSearch.htm
As with the UW Libraries Regional Newspaper and Periodical Index,
only a small percentage of citations have been uploaded to this
BC searchable database, August 1998 to date. For older citations,
the Northwest History card files must be consulted at the Vancouver
Public Library.
African American Newspapers; the 19th Century http://www.accessible.com/search/prdcls.asp
Parts I-VII, more to come. This fully searchable database provides
a wealth of information about cultural life and history during
the 1800s, and is rich with first-hand reports of the major
events and issues of the day. Starting with Freedom's Journal
(1827) and continuing well into the 19th century (new titles
continue to be added), the database focuses on newspapers published
in the American northeast, and includes one Canadian (Ontario)
newspaper.
Blacks in Selected Newspapers, Censuses
and Other Sources; an Index to Names and Subjects, compiled
by James de T. Abajian. Boston: GK Hall & Co., 1977. 3 vol.
Once one of the very few finding tools available for African
American primary research, Blacks in Selected Newspapers
remains an important reference tool. Perhaps most happily for
researchers interested in the West, this national tool emphasizes
Western African American publications, particularly California,
and also includes two early Portland newspapers and one Seattle
paper. However, the index is selective and inconsistent in format,
definitely reflecting the interests of its compiler who had
not originally intended this work for publication. Very rich
in personal names.
Ethnic NewsWatch http://enw.softlineweb.com/
This database contains approximately 50 African American/Caribbean/African
newspapers published in the U.S. Fulltext, searchable archives
vary in chronological coverage, but most include the last ten
to twenty years. Although only two Pacific Northwest black newspapers
are included (Portland Skanner and Seattle Skanner), the database
contains thousands of news stories about the region, as reported
in many other African American newspapers across the country.
Index to Black Periodicals, formerly
Index to Periodical Articles By and About Negroes formerly Index
to Selected Periodicals, cumulated 1960-1970; then annually
to current. Boston: GK Hall. Includes geographic main headings
and many geographic subheadings.
The Kaiser Index to Black Resources,
1948-1986 (5 vol). Carlson Publishing, Inc. 1992. From the
Kaiser card index at the Schomberg Center for Research in Black
Culture, The New York Public Library, this print set includes
indexing from the Chicago Defender, the Afro American (Baltimore),
other primarily East coast and Midwest publications. Articles
about Pacific Northwest African Americans can be found using
Kaiser.
Minority, Ethnic and Special Audience
Newspapers; a Multi-Media Bibliography http://db.lib.washington.edu/press
This UW Libraries database, continually under development, seeks
to identify all special audience newspapers published in the
Pacific Northwest, including Alaska and western Canada. Currently,
37 African American newspapers have been identified, the majority
published in Washington State. See the appendix for a list of
titles held at the University of Washington Libraries.
Negro Periodicals in the United States.
Westport, Ct.: Negro Universities Press, 1970.
This collection of negro serials was published in 1970 as a
reprint series and includes 35 titles. Series I includes titles
published between 1840 and 1960; Series II adds additional titles
from 1827 to 1950. It is one of the few identifiable collections
dealing exclusively with early serialized publications on the
African American as a subject. See http://www.liu.edu/cwis/cwp/library/historic.htm
for an excellent description of the series.
