Art abounds in Oaxaca, a colonial city of 350,000 about 300 miles south of Mexico City and home to many artists and galleries. Oaxaca is also the name of the Mexican state and home to seven indigenous groups, the largest of which is Zapotec.
The city is noted for its mild climate, located at about 5000 feet altitude
There are many festivals, both religious (Catholicism is the dominant religion) and sectarian. Tourism is probably the largest industry; there are several thousand tourists during the winter months, mostly U.S. and Canadians.
