Can tidal power promote sustainable integrated coastal development in Bangladesh?
Coastal Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, especially from cyclones, tidal surges and the effects of global warming on sea-level rise. Consequently, most of this coastal area has been protected by embankments and sluice gates, which can accommodate the normal tidal head rise and fall. The potential of tidal power to use this infrastructure, together with its associated problems and mitigation measures, have been analysed by comparing existing and potential tidal power technologies around the world, including a proposed Kimberley tidal power project in Western Australia. The research has identified that a significant amount of power could be produced from the tidal range of coastal Bangladesh by using the simple low-cost technology of tidal wheels in the tidal embankment sluice gates. The electricity produced could be utilised by various coastal interests, such as agriculture, shrimp aquaculture and other resource producing activities. However, the real benefits of this technology are that it can be applied in a way that simultaneously enables the development of local infrastructure and the improvement in living conditions of the local people by creating income generation and employment opportunities in these coastal communities. The thesis puts forward a community based co-management model as a means of effectively integrating tidal power in coastal area management in Bangladesh |

candidate gene study and a full genome screen for male homosexuality
The second report and major portion of the thesis, consists of a full genome scan of a large collection of sibships containing brothers concordant for homosexuality. An allele-sharing linkage methodology is used to analyze the data. In the analyses, sexual orientation is considered both as a dichotomous phenotype as well as a quantitative trait and the Kinsey scales of sexual orientation are used to define the phenotype. The sample population consists of 144 sibships that comprise either two gay brothers (135 sibpairs) or three gay brothers (9 sibtrios). With available parents and heterosexual siblings, a total of 456 individuals are included in the study. The results suggest that several loci could influence this complex trait, although no conclusive evidence for a particular locus is obtained. Among the conclusions of the report is that a new candidate gene on 9q22, 17-[beta]-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase III (HSD17[beta]3), may influence the development of homosexuality in some men. Other analyses justify continued interest in the Xq28 region but also indicate that separate developmental pathways might influence the trait as well |

Captive rearing and biology of the endangered giant land snails Placostylus ambagiosus and P. hongii (Pulmonata:Bulimulidae) /
Rearing of the land snails Placostylus ambagiosus paraspiritus, P. a. michiei, and P. hongii in captivity was investigated as a conservation management option for establishing new populations of these threatened animals. Snails were kept in the laboratory with mostly karaka, Corynocarpus laevigatus, leaves as food. Snails were exposed to differing frequencies of handling, crowding conditions, and given different substrates in which to lay eggs. Less frequent disturbance resulted in better survival in P. ambagiosus. Both P. ambagiosus and P. hongii laid clutches of 1-84 similarly sized eggs buried up to 2 cm deep, but the species appeared to have different substrate size preferences. Placostylus ambagiosus kept singly or in pairs grew larger than those in the wild. Crowding reduced growth rate, increased mortality, and resulted in smaller adults. Captive-bred adult P. ambagiosus lived for 3.3-11.4 y: one adult P. hongii lived for 2.6 y and another lived for 4.6 y before being translocated onto an island. Both Placostylus ambagiosus and P. hongii can be successfully reared in captivity, in the laboratory, and large numbers of snails can potentially be produced, albeit with substantial costs. Although potentially risky for augmenting existing populations, these protocols may enable the establishment of new populations of these snails |

Capture-based aquaculture : the fattening of eels, groupers, tunas, and yellowtails /
This publication defines and reviews certain practices that are shared between aquaculture and capture fisheries. It specifically considers the on-growing of fattening of four species groups - eels, groupers, tunas and yellowtails - which is based on the use of wild-caught "seed". The report begins with an introduction on the overlap between aquaculture and fisheries and their global trends. Chapters on the four species group follow and include information on species identification, fishery trends, the supply and transfer of "seed" for stocking purposes, aquaculture trends, culture systems, feeds and feeding regimes, fish health, harvesting and marketing. Further chapters examine the environmental and socio-economic impacts of capture-based aquaculture, together with the relevant fisheries and aquaculture management issues. Finally, the report looks at food safety issues, as well as identifies topics for future consideration. The principal targeted audience includes policy-makers, administrators and trainers in the fields of aquaculture, fisheries and the environment |

Carbon pools and fluxes as an indicator of riparian restoration
Riparian forests are integral components of the landscape. The inherent biogeochemical processes that occur in such forests provide numerous benefits to wildlife and society. Maintaining good water quality is a major benefit from riparian forests and therefore, the maintenance, creation, or restoration of riparian forests is indispensable. This study was designed to broaden current knowledge of the complex, interrelated biogeochemical processes and determine indices for riparian forest restoration based on the various carbon pools/fluxes that may represent restoration success. This study was implemented on the Savannah River Site, an Environmental Research Park, where several riparian forests are recovering from thermal disturbances. The streams in these forests were subjected to thermal discharges that increased flows and resulted in removal of soil and a decline in the amount of woody vegetation. The differential amount of inputs could affect forest productivity. However, in these riparian forests, a distance gradient effect was not observed. Trends in herbaceous biomass were evident along a microtopographic moisture gradient. The ridge and swale microtopography prevalent in the younger riparian forests counteracted a distance from the stream channel gradient effect across the riparian forest. This study provided knowledge of how carbon pools and fluxes change with riparian forest recovery from disturbance as well as through different seral stages. Implementing the findings of this study will enhance restoration evaluation efforts to ensure that these areas continue to provide the numerous benefits gleamed from them |

In the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, caribou have been collected and sampled for a number of different programs since the 1960s. Much of the original field data has been used to build databases, however as these databases were revised and changed mistakes have developed. To provide accountability and accurate documentation for the data and to encourage their use in meta-analyses such as the Canadian Wildlife Service's circumpolar assessment of caribou condition, we verified file names, field names and sample numbers relative to the original field sheets for collections that originated out of RWED Yellowknife programs 1980-2002 |

Cataloging exhibition publications best practices. Title and statement of responsibility /
The cataloging of exhibition publications poses unique challenges to new and experienced catalogers alike. These types of publications often require more use of a cataloger's judgment, and more intervention in terms of transposing, omitting, and supplying data. Decision-making about the choice of a primary access point can be quite involved, and local practices and guidelines greatly affect how an exhibition publication is cataloged. This publication of best practices, created by the ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee, is devoted to providing practical guidance to catalogers working with art exhibition publications. These guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with other cataloging documentation, including Anglo-American cataloguing rules 2nd edition, 2002 revision (AACR2), and its successor, Resource description and access (RDA), Library of Congress rule interpretations (LCRI), and MARC 21 |

Changing global book collection patterns in ARL libraries
The overlap of global book collections in member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), as exemplified by an analysis of nearly 28.5 million records in a July 2004 snapshot of the OCLC WorldCat database, is not as extensive as expected. For all countries combined, excluding North America, the average number of ARL library holdings per bibliographic record is fewer than five, that is, fewer than five ARL libraries own copies of the book represented by the bibliographic record. For each of ten world regions, excluding North America, the average number of ARL library holdings per bibliographic record ranges from a low of 2.99 for East Asian books to a high of 6.28 for Latin American books. That is, on average fewer than three and only slightly more than six ARL libraries hold any book that was published outside of North America |

Checklist of the parasites of fishes of Bangladesh /
The parasite fauna of fishes of Bangladesh remains poorly known. Parasites have been reported from only 85 of the 528 species of marine and freshwater fish occurring in the waters of Bangladesh. The situation is complicated by the large number of reports that are based on apparent misidentifications, the existence of a plethora of poorly described species, and the relatedness of the Bangladeshi fish parasite fauna to that of the larger Indian subregion, which is also poorly known for many of the same reasons |
|
Checklist of the parasites of fishes of Latvia /
The parasite fauna of fishes of Latvia has received considerable attention; nevertheless, parasites have been recorded from only about 45 percent of the more than 114 species of marine and fish occurring in the country's waters. The common freshwater fish species (particularly those having economic importance, such as the cyprinids, percids, esocids and salmonids) have been particularly well studied, providing a good general picture of their parasite faunas and data having value for use in faunistic analyses |

Checklist of the parasites of fishes of the Philippines /
This checklist summarizes information on the parasites of Philippine fishes contained in the world literature dating from the earliest known record (de Blainville 1822) to the end of 1996. Information is presented in the form of parasite-host and host-parasite lists. Included are 201 named species of parasites, distributed among the higher taxa as follows: Apicomplexta - 1, Ciliophora - 16, Mastigophora - 2, Microspora - 1, Myxozoa - 9, Trematoda - 90, Monogenea - 22, Cestoda - 6, Nematoda - 20, Acanthocephala - 5, Mollusca - 1, Branchiura - 2, Copepoda - 21 and Isopoda - 5. Also included are many records of parasites not identified to species level. Parasites have been reported from 172 of the more than 2030 species of marine and freshwater fish occurring in Philippine waters, and from another 17 species of freshwater aquarium fish examined in the Philippines but not found in natural waters. The Parasite-Host List is organized on a taxonomic basis and provides information for each parasite species on the environment (fresh water, brackish water, marine), the location (site of infection) in or on its host(s), the species of host(s) infected, the known geographic distribution (by island) in the Philippines, and the published sources for each host and locality record. The Host-Parasite List is organized according to the taxonomy of the hosts, and includes for each host, the English language and local (typically Tagalog) common names, environment (fresh water, brackish water, marine), status in the Philippines (native or exotic), and information on the known Philippine distribution of the parasites. Both lists are accompanied by remarks and footnotes, as warranted, giving specific information on points of systematics, nomenclature, possible misidentifications, introductions, pathogenicity, etc. Citations are included for all references and a supplementary list of references contains other literature on Philippine fish parasites. Parasite and host indices are included. The following new taxonomic combinations are made: Prosorhynchoides philippinorum (Velasquez, 1959) n. comb., for Bucephaloides philippinorum Velasquez, 1959; Prosorhynchoides sibi (Yamaguti, 1940) n. comb., for Bucephaloides sibi (Yamaguti, 1940); Genolinea awa (Yamaguti, 1965) n. comb., for Pseudobunocotyla awa Yamaguti, 1965; and Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) philippinensis (Velasquez, 1980) n. comb., for Spirocamallanus philippinensis Velasquez, 1980 |

Checklist of the parasites of fishes of Viet Nam /
The parasite fauna of fishes of Viet Nam has received considerable attention, particularly by scientists of the former Soviet Union, in the marine environment, and by Vietnamese and Czech freshwater scientists. Nevertheless, parasites have been recorded from only about ten percent of the more than 1300 species of marine and freshwater fish occurring in the waters of Viet Nam. Knowledge of freshwater fauna is hampered by a lack of descriptive work and by many probable misidentifications of parasites, due to the tendency of Vietnamese workers to report European species from the local fish fauna |

Chemical evolution of galactic systems
Recently, the most detailed abundance pattern ever measured beyond the local universe was obtained for a high-redshift quasar absorption cloud, providing an exciting opportunity to explore early conditions of galaxy formation. We compare the chemical abundances in this distant object with predictions from a series of models, in order to gain insight into the protogalaxy's age and star formation history. We continue investigating the high-redshift universe, turning our attention to the issue of space-time variations in the fine-structure constant, as suggested by quasar absorption-line constraints. An excess abundance of heavy Mg isotopes in the absorbing clouds could partly account for the data, without needing to invoke variations in fundamental constants of nature. An enhanced early population of intermediate-mass stars could lead to such extreme Mg isotopic ratios, but we show that additional chemical consequences of this scenario conflict with observations |

Chemical residues in waterfowl and gamebirds harvested in Canada, 1987-95
This report reviews data on chemical residues in Canadian waterfowl and game birds collected from across the country in order to: obtain recent data on contaminants so that Health Canada could assess the human health risk from eating game birds; and to identify any potential avian health concerns related to the contaminant residue levels. Over 800 pools of waterfowl, game bird, and sea bird muscle, egg, and liver tissues were analyzed for chlorobenzenes, chlordanes, hexachlorocyclohexanes, dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethanes, mirex, dieldrin, octachlorostyrene, polychlorinated biphenyls, arsenic, selenium, mercury, lead, and cadmium. Selected subsets of samples were also analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, toxaphene, or caesium-137 activity |

China - UW restricted
With more than 700 million residents living in rural areas, China is still a predominantly rural country. But despite substantial improvements in standards of living, the Chinese countryside is largely lagging behind. This report analyzes the key socio-economic forces at work in China's rural areas and discusses the current government strategy for rural development. It argues that in order to bridge rural-urban divides the current policy approach needs to go further in recognizing rural-urban complementarities beyond agriculture and that food-security targets need to be balanced with wider rural development objectives.--Publisher's description |

China : defining the boundary between the market and the state - UW restricted
China has made enormous progress in developing the modern legal and regulatory foundation for the market economy. The private sector is now the main driver of growth, and new laws have gone a long way toward establishing private property rights, competition, and mechanisms for entry and exit comparable to those of many OECD countries. At the same time important challenges remain, including further clarification of the scope of state ownership, reform of relations among central and local governments, firmer establishment of the rule of law, and strengthening of regulatory institutions and processes. This review of China's regulatory system focuses on the overall economic context for regulatory reform, the government's capacity to manage regulatory reform, competition policy and enforcement, and market openness. The review also examines the regulatory framework in the electricity, water and health care sectors, and follows a multidisciplinary and highly interactive approach. A number of OECD instruments and policies are used in this assessment, although the review also takes into account the specific challenges faced by the Chinese authorities. The review includes a comprehensive set of policy recommendations.--Publisher's description |

Chip geometry : methods to impact the geometry of market chips /
In general there is an understanding that geometrical consistency of chips is desirable in the pulping processes (both for mechanical and chemical pulping). Scandinavian pulp mills normally communicate requirements for chip geometry to the producers through quality regulations and bonus penalty systems. To optimize their deliveries sawmills try to produce chips of optimal size and screen out undesired fractions, and as a standard procedure they re-chip oversized chips into acceptable sizes. This thesis evaluates the level of consistency of market chips and the possibilities to increase consistency. Studies were conducted in the value chain from the point of chip production in sawmills to the point of delivery at the pulp mill gate. The geometry of chips from a single sawmill is almost as uniform as that of chips made by a pulp mill and the geometry is relatively consistent over time. However the geometry differs among sawmills and the resulting mix can be expected to have low consistency. There are possibilities to increase total consistency by steering chips from different sawmills toward common geometrical targets. In 2001 an additional (fifth) screen was introduced in the SCAN-standard for measuring chip fractions, with the aim to increase possibilities to promote consistency. When constructing bonus penalty systems for the new standard it is important to take into consideration the effects the additional screen has on the classification result. Oversized chips that are re-chipped were found to differ from ordinary market chips in geometry, in addition to having high content of bark and defects |

CITES-listed species database
The database contains the scientific names of all species currently or previously listed in CITES Appendices I, II or III with the exception of Appendix-II Orchidaceae, for which the data are only partially complete. Collation of data for ecosystem modelling of Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve /
In New Zealand, our understanding of coastal marine ecosystems is surprisingly limited. Ecosystem models that link all species in a food web via energy transfer can be valuable tools for increasing our understanding of these ecosystems. We present the data required to build a balanced ecosystem model for the coastal marine region surrounding and including Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve, near Gisborne, New Zealand. We consolidate species into 22 groups and discuss them in detail, presenting additional information for subgroups and individual species as available. We review the literature and field data used to estimate values for each group as well as for the system as a whole. We also outline how we defined the spatial extent of many groups. For each group, we discuss the variability within estimates of four main data types (biomass, production rates, consumption rates and diet preferences) and we outline different ways to estimate diet composition to maximise the realism of such models. We are relatively confident that the data presented here accurately represent the structure and function of the ecosystem. However, there are many groups for which better information would improve model reliability. Therefore, we should aim to fill these knowledge gaps in the future, to better inform ecosystem models for coastal marine systems |

Collection level description : a review of existing practice : a supporting study in the JISC Electronic Libraries (eLib) Programme /
This study reviews existing practice for collection level description, as it exists in the library, archival, museum, and Internet communities. It begins by providing a discussion on what the term "collection" means, firstly from the perspective of libraries, museums, and archives, and then taking a look at the more recent meaning of the term as it is used on the World Wide Web. Finally, a detailed look is taken at some of the existing schemes that are used for collection and service description |

collection of amphibians and reptiles from hilly eastern Cambodia
The first amphibian and reptile collection is reported from hilly eastern Cambodia since Henri Mouhot's work in 1859. The collection contains 30 species of amphibians and 42 species of reptiles. Leptobrachium mouhoti, new species, and Ophryophryne synoria, new species, are described. Of the remaining collection, 11 species of amphibians (39.3%) and seven species of snakes (33.3%) are reported from Cambodia for the first time. Comparisons of the frogs show strong faunal overlap with that of mountainous central Vietnam, but little faunal overlap with the Cardamom Mountains of southwestern Cambodia |

Commercially important wild mushrooms and fungi of British Columbia : what the buyers are buying /
Information collected from 10 wild mushroom buyers in British Columbia in early spring 2002 indicated that over 40 species of mushrooms have been commercially harvested from the forests of the province. Currently, however, two species--pine mushroom and Pacific golden chanterelle--dominate, and seven other species or species groups are handled by half of the buyers responding to the survey. Some of the fungi previously thought to be commercially harvested in British Columbia are in fact brought in from elsewhere. Also, misidentifications and taxonomic uncertainty in some cases mean that the exact identity of the fungi being harvested is not known. Nonetheless, this survey confirms that a variety of edible wild mushrooms from B.C. forests are commercially marketed |

comparative study of functional morphology of the male reproductive systems in the Astacidea with emphasis on the freshwater crayfishes (Crustacea:Decapoda) /
This study of the functional morphology of the male reproductive system in astacidean crustaceans has allowed for comparisons of representatives of the superfamilies Parastacoidea, Enoplometopoidea, Nephropoidea, and the Astacoidea with a focus on the crayfishes. Tissues from the testes and (to the extent possible) vasa deferentia were prepared for light and scanning electron microscopy and specimens of the following families were used: Parastacidae -- Parastacoides tasmanicus tasmanicus, Astacopsis franklinii, Parastacus nicoleti; Enoplometopidae -- Enoplometopus occidentalis; Nephropidae -- Homarus americanus; Astacidae -- Pacifastacus leniusculus trowbridgii; Cambaridae -- Cambaroides japonicus, Cambaroides similis, Cambarus (Puncticambarus) acuminatus, C. (Hiaticambarus) longulus, Procambarus (Ortmannicus) fallax, P. (O.) zonangulus, P. (Scapulicambarus) paeninsulanus, and Orconectes (Procericambarus) rusticus. The single organ testis is "H-shaped" in members of the Parastacoidea, Enoplometopoidea, and Nephropoidea and consists of a pair of longitudinal lobes, each composed of an anterior and posterior lobule joined by a transverse commissure or bridge. The derived "Y-shaped" pattern of the testis of the Astacoidea is trilobed and consists of a pair of anterior lobules and a median posterior lobule that in most adult Cambaridae are joined by a trifurcate, constricted stalk, a structure that is lacking in the Cambaroidinae and Astacidae. The sac-like acini lie in the axes of the testicular lobules and produce spermatozoa. As spermatogenesis proceeds, each acinus becomes larger and, with spermiogenesis and the expulsion of spermatozoa into the collecting ducts, undergoes one or two of three fates: (1) acinus regeneration occurs and another cycle of sperm production ensues (adopted exclusively by the Astacidae and Cambaroidinae); (2) secondary acini develop in the wall of existing acini, converting the primary acinus into a passageway to the collecting tubules; or (3) the acinus degenerates and new acini arise from collecting tubules (employed only by the Cambarinae and Cambarellinae). The first and second fates have been adopted by the Parastacoidea, the Enoplometopoidea, and the Nephropoidea. In the Cambarinae and Cambarellinae, the germinal cells are recognizable only in the acinar buds from the collecting tubules and when they assume the role of spermatogonia; they are not evident along the lengths of the tubules nor are they present within an acinus after the onset of spermatogenesis. In all other astacideans examined, the germinal cells seem always to be present in the collecting tubules. Additionally, they appear in the walls of acini by the time the spermatogenic elements are being converted to spermatids, frequently forming clusters, the primordia of secondary acini in the Parastacoidea, the Nephropoidea, and occasionally the Enoplometopoidea. Germinal cells may be disposed in a partial layer or scattered within the walls of an acinus and constitute the initial spermatogonia of a new cycle of sperm production. This is what occurs in the acini of the Astacidae, Cambaroidinae, Parastacoidea, Nephropoidea, and Enoplometopoidea |

Competition between the threatened Bliss Rapids snail, Taylorconcha serpenticola (Hershler et al.) and the invasive, aquatic snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Gray)
Due primarily to habitat loss and invasive species, extinction rates for North American mollusk taxa are among the highest for any taxonomic group in the world. Competition between invasive and native species often leads to decreases in native populations. For example, a primary reason for listing the Bliss Rapids snail, Taylorconcha serpenticola as threatened in the Snake River drainage was the perceived impacts of the highly invasive New Zealand mudsnail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Despite federal protection of T. serpenticola and the known presence of P. antipodarum in the Snake River drainage for almost 20 years, almost nothing is known about their ecology and competitive interactions. For this dissertation I conducted both field and laboratory studies to determine niche overlaps, spatial patterns, and some life history characteristics of both species. I compared optimal growth temperatures and estimated temperature tolerances for each species, under laboratory conditions; 2) examined stage (size) class fecundity rates and growth rates; and 3) examined photophobic tendencies of both species. I then explored environmental conditions and spatial patterns of both species in Banbury Springs, a tributary of the Snake River, near Hagerman, Idaho, that may have affected their distribution and abundance using regression tree analysis and geostatistical methods. I then conducted several competition experiments between both species under controlled conditions at Banbury Springs, developed competition coefficients, and related their growth rates and competitive outcomes to periphyton abundance and diversity. Finally, I monitored and then modeled seasonal and yearly population density trends of both species in a section of Banbury Springs, where both coexist, using time series analysis. Results of this study show that that both species have niche overlaps (i.e. temperature overlaps, photophobic tendencies, and somewhat similar habitat requirements) and can compete for limited food resources, but may have just enough niche separation or their occupied habitat is heterogeneous enough for them to coexist, at present. It is possible however that not enough time has elapsed for the effects of competition with P. antipodarum to push T. serpenticola to extinction |

Competition potential between sauger and walleye in non-native sympatry historical trends and resource overlap in the middle Missouri River, Montana /
Sauger, Sander canadensis, populations throughout Montana and North America have exhibited declines over the past few decades. Sauger population abundance declined in the middle Missouri and Yellowstone rivers of Montana in the mid-1980s following a period of drought. Higher flows resulted in a rebound of the lower Yellowstone River population; however, the middle Missouri River population has remained at low abundance. Various factors may contribute to the reduced population abundance of sauger in the middle Missouri River, including interspecific competition with walleye, Sander vitreus. Historical trend data of sauger and walleye were assessed to determine long-term trends of sauger and walleye fitness. To assess competition potential, seasonal migrations, habitat use, and diets of both species were compared in the middle Missouri River. Trophic position of sauger was also compared between the middle Missouri and Yellowstone rivers to evaluate the trophic status of sauger in sympatry and allopatry with walleye. Sauger and walleye were tracked using radio telemetry to establish and compare seasonal migrations. Habitat use was compared at three hierarchical scales, diets were collected on fish sampled using electrofishing, and diet overlap was calculated. Trophic position was calculated using stable isotope analysis. Historical trend data indicated that sauger and walleye are currently at low abundance and sauger had low relative weights, which is likely due to low prey availability. Prior to the presumed spawning period, 96% of the sauger and 57% of the walleye migrated downstream as far as 273 km. After spawning, both species returned to previously-occupied river reaches and demonstrated site fidelity during the non-migratory season. Habitat use and selection by sauger and walleye were similar at all three hierarchical scales. Diet overlap was high during the spring [0.72 (SE=0.003)] and summer [0.95 (SE=0.0008)] and moderate during autumn [0.49 (SE=0.003)]. Sauger trophic position differed statistically between the middle Missouri and Yellowstone rivers; however, the biological consequences of the difference are uncertain. Overall, resource overlap of sauger and walleye in the middle Missouri River, Montana suggests that competition potential between these species is high, which may preclude the recovery of native sauger populations if resources are limiting |

complexities of farce with a case study on Fawlty Towers /
Integral to the thesis is a study on laughter. Various laughter theories will be studied in relation to Fawlty Towers to establish that, like farce, laughter is also a complicated subject matter worthy of study. Through association, farce is shown to be even more complex. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the Fawlty Towers performance text to illustrate farce's multifaceted nature, and that it can, and should, be taken "seriously." The series' "closed world" will be examined to discover how it ideally suits the farcical paradigm. Then, using Victorian beliefs and ethics as a contextual base, I explore how farce parodies this outdated value system as it is played out anachronistically through the character of Basil Fawlty. The thesis terminates with a brief conclusion summing up what was analyzed, while affirming that the premise proposed in the introduction has been achieved |

Components of internalized homophobia, self-disclosure of sexual orientation to physician, and durable power of attorney for health care completion in older gay men
Older gay men may experience significant stressors additional to the normative effects of aging: stigma, discrimination, and internalized homophobia. These additional minority stressors may affect the health choices of gay men as they age. The purpose of this study was to explore the health care choices of older gay men through an examination of age cohort, two components of internalized homophobia, self-disclosure of sexual orientation to physician, and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care (DPAHC) completion in a sample of 105 gay men 65 years of age and older (range = 65-87). The study used Chi square, t-test, and logistic regression to explore the variables. Results of the study indicated that: (a) gay men 65 years and older who had self-disclosed their sexual orientation to their physicians were more likely to have completed a DPAHC, (b) gay men 65 years and older who disclosed showed a lower discomfort with gay identity than non-disclosers, (c) gay men 75 years of age and older who disclosed their sexual orientation to their physician also showed lower discomfort with gay identity than those who had not disclosed, (d) gay men 65 years and older who disclosed their sexual orientation to their physician were 3.89 times more likely to have completed a DPAHC than those individuals who had not disclosed their sexual orientation to their physician, (e) gay men 75 years of age and older were 2.75 times more likely to have completed a DPAHC than gay men 65-74 years of age, (f) increased discomfort with gay identity was associated with a 44% decreased likelihood of disclosure of sexual orientation to their physician for each one unit increase in the score on the Discomfort with Gay Identity component, and (g) participants completing a DPAHC were 3.92 times more likely to self-disclose their sexual orientation to their physician than those who had not completed a DPAHC |

Consequences of prejudice-related discrepancies compunction alters the perception of ongoing behavior /
The stereotyping and prejudice literature emphasizes the importance of examining differences between high- and low-prejudice individuals with regard to how they form impressions, because pinpointing such differences may provide valuable information for prejudice-reduction efforts. However, the possibility that low-prejudice individuals may actually perceive behavior differently than do their high-prejudice counterparts has not been explored. Two studies examined the roles of sexual-prejudice and prejudice-related discrepant cognitions (i.e., from either societal or personal egalitarian standards) in the perception of the ongoing behavior of a target identified as either gay or heterosexual. Study 1 revealed that high-discrepancy low-prejudice individuals perceptually segmented the ongoing behavior of a gay target in a less stereotypic manner than did all other participants. Study 2 examined the relationship between automatic negative reactions to gay targets and perceptual segmentation, but the results were inconclusive |

Conservation and the delivery of ecosystem services : a literature review /
Ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems, such as clean air, fresh water, and the pollination of crops. The aim of this literature review was to find empirical data illustrating the ways in which conservation land and conservation management activities affect ecosystem services. The widely-held belief that natural ecosystems--such as those found on conservation land in New Zealand--provide a range of ecosystem services is generally supported by the literature. International studies show that natural vegetation can decrease air pollution, regulate local air temperatures, improve water quality, reduce shallow soil erosion, and retain natural nutrient cycles. It can also be beneficial for pest control and pollination on agricultural land. Wetlands can improve water quality and can play a role in drought and flood mitigation. Seagrasses, saltmarsh vegetation, and mangroves can reduce the height and force of waves and play a role in flood protection. In addition, maintaining biodiversity preserves genetic libraries and future options for discoveries of valuable biological compounds. The few studies investigating the effects of conservation management activities on ecosystem services indicate that restoring vegetation can improve water quality and water storage functions, can reverse soil degradation on a local scale, and can restore plant-insect interactions. Additionally, removing some invasive plant species can increase water yield. Unfortunately, very few studies of ecosystem services have been conducted in New Zealand to date, and only some of the international results are likely to be applicable under New Zealand conditions. Accordingly, while conservation is probably beneficial for a range of ecosystem services in New Zealand, the scarcity of local data makes it difficult to ascertain where and when, and to what extent, the majority of those benefits transpire |

Conservation of leopards in Ayubia National Park, Pakistan
Large carnivores are important for biodiversity and ecosystem function, yet are very difficult to conserve because of their large home ranges and conflicts with humans. I examined human-leopard conflicts in and near Ayubia National Park, Pakistan, to provide management recommendations for the conservation of leopards. Persecution of leopards by humans has been on the rise primarily due to depredation on livestock and risk to human lives. Since 1989, 16 humans have either been killed or injured in and around Ayubia National Park while leopards faced 44 human-caused mortalities during the same period. I examined the management strategy adopted by NWFP Wildlife Department for leopard conservation, identify gaps, and suggest possible management actions to mitigate the conflicts. For this purpose, I reviewed the management of carnivores including mountain lions, wolves, and grizzly bears to learn from management successes and failures in North America. Based on my review, I make the following recommendations to improve leopard management in and near Ayubia. First, to minimize human-leopard conflicts, educational and information programs to modify human behavior to reduce risks should be developed. Second, predator compensation programs and livestock vaccination programs would help reduce livestock conflicts. Lastly, broader scale management changes such as enhanced protection of areas surrounding Ayubia National Park, re-introduction of extirpated native ungulates as prey for leopards, and improvements in monitoring could benefit leopard conservation |

Considering communities in forest management planning in western Oregon /
A recurrent theme in the development of U.S. forest policies has been the assertion of strong positive relations among communities, economies, and natural resource management. Now as a new round of federal land management planning is getting underway, questions are being raised about the strength of that assertion and how to view communities following a decade of reduced federal harvests. This report examines these questions considering the 433 communities in six Bureau of Land Management districts in western Oregon. It discusses the ways that forest-based communities have been considered in the context of federal forest management planning, and it summarizes information on socioeconomic conditions and trends for communities in western Oregon |

constitutions of the Free-Masons (1734) an online electronic edition /
"This is an online electronic edition of the the first Masonic book printed in America, which was produced in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin in 1734, and was a reprint of a work by James Anderson (who is identified as the author in an appendix) printed in London in 1723. This is the seminal work of American Masonry, edited and published by one of the founding fathers, and of great importance to the development of colonial society and the formation of the Republic. The work contains a 40-page history of Masonry: from Adam to the reign of King George I, including, among others, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Solomon, Hiram Abif, Nebuchadnezzar, Augustus Caesar, Vitruvius, King Athelstan the Saxon, Inigo Jones, and James I of England. There are extended descriptions of the Seven Wonders of the World, viz. 1) the Great Pyramid, 2) Solomon's Temple, 3) the City and Hanging-Gardens of Babylon, 4) the Mausoleum or Tomb of Mausolus, King of Caria, 5) the Lighthouse of Pharos at Alexandria, 6) Phidias's statue of Jupiter Olympius in Achaia, and 7) the Colossus at Rhodes (although some maintain the 5th is the Obelisk of Semiramis). It is a celebration of the science of Geometry and the Royal Art of Architecture, as practiced from ancient times until the then-current revival of the Roman or Augustan Style. 'The Charges of a Free-Mason' and the 'General Regulations' concern rules of conduct for individuals and of governance for Lodges and their officers. The work also includes five songs to be sung at meetings, one of which--'A New Song'--appears in print for the first time and may have been composed by Franklin. The document suggests that Masonry, in its modern Anglo-American form, was rooted in Old Testament exegesis ('So that the Israelites, at their leaving Egypt, were a whole Kingdom of Masons ... under the Conduct of their GRAND MASTER MOSES') and in contemporary Protestant ideals of morality, merit, and political equality"--Abstract at http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/libraryscience/25 |

Constructing rainbow classrooms non-heterosexual students journey toward safer schools /
Using Narrative Inquiry, I interview three non-heterosexual female high school students in order to give voice to their experiences of alienation, harassment, and struggle with sexual identity. Additionally, the students discuss their visions of safe schools and their roles in creating and maintaining safe and welcoming school environments. Within the matrix of queer theory and queer pedagogy, I examine the components of safe schools that currently exist in these students' schools and relay what the students are doing to improve the level of tolerance and safety in their schools. I interview three other non-heterosexual females in order to contextualize the high school students' experiences. One teacher, one youth support group volunteer, and one young woman currently out of school provide additional layers of perspective as I analyze the narratives and suggest modifications in curriculum materials, instructional practices and administrative policies that will construct safer school environments |

Consumption of non-toxic baits by grand (Oligosoma grande) and Otago (O. otagense) skinks /
Three bait types that are commonly used in pest mammal control programmes were tested for their attractiveness to wild grand (Oligosoma grande) and Otago (O. otagense) skinks, and their potential prey. This was assessed through observations and video recordings in the skinks' natural habitat in north Otago, New Zealand. Both skink species have been assigned a threat status of Nationally Critical. Non-toxic samples of RS5 cereal baits, carrot and FeraCol paste (peanut butter flavoured) were presented in two sizes to free-ranging animals during late March 2006; cereal baits were also presented wet or dry. All bait types were sampled (licked, nudged, or bitten) by both species of skink, but large baits (both wet and dry) appeared to be less attractive and were not consumed. Both species of these threatened skinks were observed consuming small pieces of wet cereal baits and FeraCol paste. Of the potential prey species, one McCann's skink (O. maccanni) was observed consuming a small piece of carrot, and one worm, ground weta (Hemiandrus sp.) and flies consumed wet and dry cereal baits |

Corporate governance of state-owned enterprises : a survey of OECD countries - UW restricted
This publication presents the OECD Guidelines on Corporate Governance of State-Owned Enterprises as well as a comparative overview of main practices and issues related to corporate governance of state-owned enterprises in the OECD area. The analytical part of the report examines the scale of these enterprises in OECD countries, organization of the ownership function, relationships with non-state shareholders, the role of stakeholders in corporate governance, transparency and disclosure, and the board of directors. Tables in the annex compare legal status, transparency and disclosure, and board composition and functions, and CEO appointment and remuneration policies of state-owned enterprises across countries.--Publisher description |
