East Asia Library 80th Anniversary Exhibits

About the series of exhibits (March 2017 - January 2018) on the UW East Asia Library (EAL) and its history, in celebration of the library's 80th anniversary.

The year 2017 marked the 80th anniversary of the East Asia Library (EAL) at the University of Washington. Eighty years of hard and excellent work of librarians, staff, and faculty have built this world-class East Asia Library, a hallmark and source of pride for the university. To commemorate this special milestone, we combed through old files, publications, photographs, our collective memory, and more, in order to trace and document our history and create a series of exhibits which were displayed throughout the year.

Exhibit 1: Buildings and Architecture

Dates: March - July 2017

Location: East Asia Library (Gowen Hall Floor 3)

This first exhibit explored the history of the East Asia Library through the different spaces it has inhabited—from humble beginnings in a single room in the Suzzallo Library, to a temporary building, to the basement of Thomson Hall, to its current home in Gowen Hall (plus its auxiliary spaces)—and how the library grew and changed along the way.

Exhibit research, content preparation, design, and installation by the EAL 80th Anniversary Task Force, which for the first exhibit included Eddy Harrison, Emily Jantz, Dajeong Lee, Juan Luo, and Hyokyoung Yi (chair). Ritsuko Kurima and Saori Tachibana also helped with installation and final touches.

The third and final exhibit was a culmination of all the work of the EAL 80th Anniversary Task Force throughout 2017, and featured the contents of the previous exhibits as well as a plethora of new content, including over 100 photographs from the EAL’s eighty-year history, historic documents and artifacts, items from the collection, and information on the staff of the library through the years. It also included a video of interviews conducted during the 80th Anniversary reception event, wherein users shared their EAL stories and what the library meant to them.
